Waste
Solid waste is collected by Gwynedd Council. Recycleable waste is collected weekly on a Friday morning and the 'wheely' bins of non-recycleable waste is collected every third week. A calendar showing dates can be found by clicking HERE.
Sewage
Nobody likes it but it has to go somewhere. All the drains at Plas Panteidal are connected through a rather fragile pipe network and on to a sewage treatment plant on the estate. PPEML are responsible for its maintenance and ensuring it complies with environmental regulations.
When the previous estate owner went into liquidation, the sewage treatment plant was broken down and raw sewage was pouring down the hillside and across the main road below. Public health authorities and Natural Resources Wales took Court action when the situation wasn't resolved. When PPEML took control, one of the first actions was to put the plant back into action and stop the pollution to the satisfaction of the authorities. Thankfully, this was achieved without too much difficulty and at the moment everyone is happy and the Court action was cancelled.
However, the state of the treatment plant is dire, it was not properly maintained for many years and it is in terrible condition. There is no practical way to bring it back to a standard where PPEML could be confident of it working reliably for any length of time. It has to be replaced.
The plant is on the bank beside the main road, access is along collapsed steps and through undergrowth. In order to replace it, a new clearing will have to be made, a new concrete base installed and then the new equipment fitted on to it. Access is very difficult for all that work and traffic management will have to be comissioned along the road for several days while concrete pumps and then a crane is positioned to left the new equipment into place. Finally, there is the issue of connecting it to the existing sewer pipes and outlet pipe to the discharge point while the estate is still in operation. It is a logicstics nightmare and speciallst contractors have to be engaged to carry out the works. An operational system weighs approximately 50 tons and is the size of a static caravan so it is easy to see why the job is so complicated when it is on a steep slope above a busy road.
Several companies have been contacted to get quotes for costs. Some offerend impractical solutions, all are expensive, some unreasonably so. Work is ongoing to find the most cost effective way forward to build a future proof solution.
